School-Based Mental Health Conference 2026 has ended
We are so excited to welcome our school-based mental health teams for the 26/27 school year!  All of our sessions are inspired by the Henrico CARES plan, a visionary initiative designed to create an enhanced system of mental health care that adapts to the evolving needs of HCPS’ students and families. By working together, we can create a seamless, adaptive network of care that addresses mental health needs at every age and stage honoring HCPS’ commitment to fostering inclusive, safe and supportive educational environments for all.

Supporting Children of Parents with Mental Illness in the School Setting
Wednesday August 19, 2026 1:35pm - 2:35pm EDT
Up to 1 in 10 children live with a parent who experiences mental illness. Children of parents living with mental illness often face unique emotional, behavioral, academic, and social challenges that may go unrecognized within the school environment. As trusted mental health professionals, school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors are uniquely positioned to identify risk factors, foster resilience, and provide meaningful support that promotes student success.
This interactive presentation will examine the impact of parental mental illness on child development, school functioning, attendance, behavior, and mental health. Participants will explore common warning signs, trauma-informed and strengths-based intervention strategies, and practical approaches for collaborating with families, educators, and community providers while maintaining ethical and culturally responsive practices.

Through case examples, discussion, and evidence-informed strategies, participants  will strengthen their ability to create supportive school environments that reduce stigma, enhance protective factors, and improve educational and social-emotional outcomes for students navigating the challenges associated with parental mental illness.
